Reading Group | Humans Are Born, Land Is Not | Led by Shani Poker
June 24, 2026

July 15, 2026
In this series, we will read the works of four poets: Avoth Yeshurun, Mahmoud Darwish, Leah Goldberg, and Esther Raab. Each session will focus on the body of work of one poet, providing a framework to discuss a different stance on concepts of affinity and detachment to the land: statelessness, exile, immigration, and homeland. Through the shared reading, we will examine how "place" is formed in their poetry—not as a stable given, but as a space that shifts between language, memory, and history, and how writing about the here always opens up to an elsewhere.
The group will be led by Shani Pocker who is a poet and literary critic for the Haaretz book review, and a PhD candidate in Hebrew Poetry at the Tel Aviv University.
The meetings will take place once a week on Tuesdays, from 18:30 to 20:00.
Session I, June 24 – Statelessness: Avoth Yeshurun
Session II, July 1 – Exile: Mahmoud Darwish
Session III, July 8 – Immigration: Leah Goldberg
Session IV, July 15 – Homeland: Esther Raab
The sessions will be held in Hebrew.
